Close the deal, open the river
Last fall, Berkshire subsidiary PacifiCorp recognized its Klamath River dams as an economic burden and toxic asset, and the company agreed in principle to remove the Klamath River hydropower dams.
This is a long step in the right direction by PacifiCorp’s bold new management, and one they deserve a great deal of credit for taking.
This summer, PacifiCorp and dozens of other parties will sign a binding final agreement to take four dams out of the Klamath River no later than 2020. The company is currently at the negotiating table working with Klamath River tribes, commercial fishing groups, farmers and other stakeholders in good faith to finish the agreement in a way that works for all parties - it must protect water quality, stay consistent with existing laws and regulations and use the best available science.
Negotiations aren't yet over, the dams are still in, Klamath fish are still in decline and the Klamath River is still polluted. Therefore Klamath advocates, tribal members and fishermen will return to Omaha in 2009 with a message for Berkshire and PacifiCorp: Close the deal and open the river!
